Using the "GOLDEN RATIO" in your closet!
Updated: Nov 3, 2022
What the heck is the "golden ratio"? Sadly, it has to do with math.
The golden ratio is a mathematical ratio, often found in nature, that creates aesthetically pleasing compositions in design, art, and even fashion. The formula for the golden ratio is as follows: a/b = (a+b)/a = 1.618 = Φ. Φ is the Greek symbol for Phi (which I know because I am in a Greek Letter organization!)

If you don't believe me, take a look at the Pyramids of Giza or even the Sistine Chapel ceiling. Many major works of art fall under the golden ratio!
So, how can you use this random number to make your outfits look better? It's all about proportions. Let's use the above ratio and the golden spiral to understand.

The golden spiral is a visual representation of the golden ratio, as each square is an equal proportion to the next smallest one after it.
To use this in style, follow the rule of thirds. The rule of thirds involves the same ratio, but in a slightly alternative format. The correct ratio is 1: 0.618: 1, but I like to simplify it in my mind to 2:1 (for the sake of me not being great at math). Here's how I use it with black clothing:
Two-thirds of the outfit is solid black and one-third is a color
Two-thirds of the outfit is solid black and one-third is a pattern
Two-thirds of the outfit is solid black and one-third is a fun texture
However, there are also ways to use this ratio with the fit/cut of the clothing itself.
Instead of wearing a simple pair of trousers and a blouse, which has a ratio of 1:1, opt for high waisted pants and tuck your shirt in to bring the ratio towards 2:1
When wearing long sleeves that are full coverage, consider opting for a skirt and low cut shoes to spread everything out
With fitted pants, grab an oversized sweater or sweater vest to use the 2/3 on the top instead of bottoms!
There are so many options to play with the two-thirds rule in clothing! It's all about balance, but not a 50-50 balance like you might expect. Its the golden rule: the golden ratio!

I love when math and fashion collide! A fun fact: most people prefer using snapchat photos instead of iphone camera photos because the crop ratio on snap is the golden ratio!
